Sports Violence: A Growing Problem

Parents want to see their children excel in what they want to do, but they may not realize that perhaps they are pushing a little too hard, or taking it too seriously. Incidences of violent behavior are now becoming all too common, and are almost expected at sporting events. Raised voices, foul language, and intimidating gestures are a frequent part of these events. And the main targets of the rage seem to be coaches, referees and umpires. Men and women who are devoting their time to be involved with the lives of the children of their neighborhood and keep things fun and fair, are being railed on by disgruntled parents who think their child can do no wrong. It just doesn't seem fair.
The old phrase "It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game," no longer means much to people these days. A squad of police officers needing to be called in to break up a brawl instigated by a young player's parent is unacceptable. The children, witnessing these actions, seem to think that such behavior is permissible. This leads to a drop in respect for authority and the integrity of the game.
Parents have a responsibility to make sure their child grows up being an asset to society. They learn by example, and the best example can only come from the parent. What the children need, is not someone who will push them to be the best in the world, but someone who encourage them to be the best they can be.
