The environment in Latvia

This report aims to familiarize people with the environment in Latvia.

There are several disappointing facts and figures. Environmental problems in Latvia are various, interrelated, and quite complex.
a)There is a low quality of drinking water because of the heavy pollution of water. For example, one statistic shows that in Europe Latvia is on 34th place of 69 if we talk about freshwater pollution. Moreover, hydrobiological and hydrochemical data show that 85% of the total numbers of natural waters are polluted. Furthermore, other species are under the “influence” of polluted water because it, for instance, from point and non-point sources has serious impacts not only on the Daugava and Lielupe River but also on the Gulf of Riga.…
