Communication matters

Think of the situation where you haven’t got what people have been trying to say (at work, on hollidays, whilst shopping, at home etc). Or maybe even worse- you have become preturbed of what has been said or even in some cases upset. Why is this? Did every one else feel the same way? If not, why not?
Take that one stage further. Have you ever experienced the situation where after the event you have eventually discovered that the reason why you did not get it was because you haven’t understood where they were coming from. That in fact other people had understood it differently. And had you realised that would you have taken it different way?

The point is- How many times the person who was doing the communication intend you not understand or upset you. The answer to this is rarely, not under normal circumstances. Because each human is unique character we all process information in unique ways. Brain research shows that whiles we are exposed to the in order 2 million bits per second of information at any time. In order to cope with that amount of data we are very good at filtering it. In fact, we need to be. Imagine to be aware of everything all of the time (all smells around, taste in the mouth, clothes you wearing etc). Fortunately our own conscious mind is very good at helping us filter through the essentials to help us hope with the world. Unfortunately as we all have unique set of filters (which reduce 2 million bits per second to just 134) the information that passes through is also unique. This means that everybody will have their own unique experience of any given situation including your communication.
