Cruisers

Cruisers are a category of modern warships. They are large, fast warships with medium tonnage, designed for high speed and long cruising radius. These are used to escort aircraft carriers and for independent operations with destroyers. Most cruisers have gas turbine engines. Some have nuclear reactors provide steam power. They can travel at a speed about 30 knots (30 nautical miles per hour). Cruisers use radar, sonar and electronic intercept equipment to detect enemy aircraft, surface ships and submarines. In the 17th century, when term “Cruiser” was commonly used, it meant the purpose or mission of a ship, not a type of ship. She replaced the ships of the line in their duty (dispatching on long-range missions). During the 18th century the frigate became the pre-eminent type of cruiser. A frigate was a small, high-speed, long range ship, usually of 4,000 to 9,000 displacement tons, frequently armed with guided missile, used for scouting, carrying dispatches, and disrupting enemy trade and with shore bombardment and miscellaneous combat functions. The other principal type of cruiser was the sloop. She was a single-masted, fore-and-aft-rigged sailing vessel having one mast and fore-and-aft rig, consisting of a boom-and-gaff mainsail, jibs, staysail, and gaff topsail.…
