Pragmatics: Violating the Maxim of Quantity

The study builds upon Paul Grice’s (1975) theory of cooperative principle and conversational maxims in general, and the maxim of quantity in particular.
To keep to the conversational maxims is an important part of any conversation for it to be effective. The results of this study can be used in preparing people who are learning English for examinations or tests that include a speaking part.
The aim of the research is to examine reasons for violating the maxim of quantity in seven recorded interviews between language learners and instructors which are speaking part practices for IELTS tests of English for higher education, immigration and employment.
The research question of the study is the following: “Why interviewees violate the maxim of quantity during speaking part practices for IELTS tests?”
To attain the above mentioned aim and provide an answer to the above mentioned research question the following objectives were set:
1.To study the available material on the topic;
2.To analyse seven recorded speaking part practices for IELTS tests;
3.To select examples of violation of the maxim of quantity;
4.To draw adequate conclusions.…
