The Theme of Alienation in the Novel "Mrs Dalloway" by Virginia Woolf

In this essay I will discuss the theme of alienation; the popular trend in modernism literature. Virginia Woolf emphasizes this notion by describing one day in Clarissa Dalloway’s and Septimus Warren Smith’s life. I will concentrate on the plot line describing Clarissa’s day since I believe Septimus Warren Smith is a secondary character: he serves as the symbolic Mrs Dalloway. Septimus Warren Smith in many ways resembles Carissa Dalloway. In a way he serves as the prophecy for the possible solution of Carissa’s life.
There are several people that are of importance to Clarissa, namely her husband Richard Dalloway, her friend and (ex)-lover Peter Walsh, her daughter Elizabeth and Sally Seton – a woman from Clarissa’s youth. In this essay I will discuss Clarissa Dalloway’s relationship with her husband, daughter and Peter Walsh. I have chosen these three persons since I believe that relationship between them and Clarissa are very intimate and detached at the same time.
