The Military as an Institution and the Prejudices It Held

From the Civil War, a war for the right to freedom for the Black man, to Vietnam; the military has held an institutionalized racist view toward the Black men who wished to fight for this country. It would be in the coming years that the nation as well as the military would start to accommodate the black soldier and come to change their ways. In World War II, units are mixed; in Vietnam we would see Black officers in charge of white soldiers. Blacks were able to fight along side the Whites to pursue rank and enemy the same. The hidden curriculum, that the black man was to be lower than the white and not given the same opportunity for advancement, was disappearing. The military let go of its old ways, and adopted the more modern views of an evolving society that defined freedom as a right to all, regardless of skin color, ethnicity, and gender.…
